International Marketing Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

International Marketing - Term Paper Example This report provides a macro analysis of China, one of the fastest growing markets in the world and which provides a suitable platform for a business to invest. One of the many admirable factors about China is its political stability. This gives businesses the confidence of establishing and expanding their businesses as they are assured of enhanced security. China is a single party state which is governed and controlled by the Communist Party. The single party aspect reduces the chances of political wrangles and further reduces the chances of politicians interfering with the business operations (Hale and Long, 80). Though the tariffs in China are high, they have been drastically reducing over the past few years. However, the government still has a lot to do when dealing with e-commerce businesses. The legal framework adopted for e-commerce insufficiently addresses intellectual property, and consumer rights are yet to be satisfactorily addressed (Hartman and Brown, 2013). Even with the few challenges, the political environment in China provides a healthy platform for businesses to operate. The economic environment is the second most important factor (after political) in determining whether a business shall succeed in a country. China’s economic environment has continued to be favourable to businesses, especially with the increasing demand. Based on nominal GDP and the purchasing power parity, China is ranked second, with the first position being America (InvestinChina, 2014). It has constantly experienced an increase and growth in GDP by about 7 %, and it’s GDP, by 2013 stood at 9.82% (Shao and Gui, 2014). This depicts the promising market in China, and businesses that invest here have high chances of succeeding. In addition, the inflation in China is lower as compared to many other developed countries, having a 2.5% inflation rate (InvestinChina, 2014) and an unemployment rate of 4.1%. The growth in GDP is as depicted in the diagram

Elite Running Inc Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Elite Running Inc - Case Study Example The inventory of Elite rose by 39% in 2003 as compared to 2002. The rise in the level of inventory was preplanned by the management in order to be prepared to grab the offers from the suppliers when they offer favorable prices for the company. The changes also indicate that while the sales have declined for the company by 24%, the gross profits have declined by 53.8%. This fall in gross profits was mainly due to the changes in the product prices due to the change in competitive market scenario with the appearance of a new entrant named, Stampy. The other significant changes include fall of retained earnings of the company by 11.2% and the fall of equity by 8.4%. Explanation for tick-marks b, e & k The explanation for the tick-marks has been explained as follows. Tick-mark b The fall in the accounts receivable of Elite Running Inc. in 2003 as compared to the value of 2003 could be explained by the fall of sales figures of the company. Due to the fall in the level of sales volume of th e company, the credit offered for sales also reduced. Thus the accounts receivable also declined in 2003 as compared to 2002. Tick-mark e The inventory of the company increased by 17 million dollars which is a rise of 39% in inventory level of 2003 as compared to that of 2002. ... Tick-mark k Elite running Inc. has faced unprecedented competition in 2003. The management forecasted a 10% rises in the sales as compared to 2002. However, due to entry of a new competitor and offers of a similar footwear and apparel product by the competitor eroded their market share as the customers inclined towards the products offered by Stampy. This led to the fall of revenue earnings of the company. In order to respond to the changed external environment, the company reduced its product prices. Although, it allowed the company to retain a large number of customers, the gross profit of the company declined. Discussion: auditing and accounting issues for identified changes The accounting and auditing issues identified in the valuation accounts receivable suggest that the valuation of accounts receivables should have been $51m instead of $60m that has been recorded in the books of accounts. The issue behind this gap is that the management has influenced the accountant and the aud itor in disclosing consistent value of aging account (AICPA 18). The accounts receivable figure for a period of less than 30 days has also been suggested to be maintained at 85%. In order to do this, the accounts receivable from the three sales transactions of the new sales and marketing tool of the company, named Andy Dufresne has not been recorded under the assurance of the management. This is an auditing issue as it shows clear deviation from standards of accounting (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission 1). The accounting and auditing issue involved in the rise of inventory level of Elite Running Inc. questions the gap between the available information on the receipt of supplier materials as the reason for rise in inventory and the

My work experience Essay Example for Free

My work experience Essay My placement was with a company called Oliver Lintotts Tree Surgery. I have known Oliver for about 2 years as he is my bosss son. When I heard that my placement would be with him I was thrilled as I had worked with him before and tree surgery is a very exciting profession. I knew I could expect hard work and a good laugh. The last time I worked for him, Andy, one of Olivers employees, and I had to dig a trench to drain a field. Towards the end of the day it started to rain and I ended up almost waist-deep in a trench which was quickly filling with water and we laughed so hard we barely noticed. I already own lots of work clothes as I have had experience in tree surgery, carpentry, roofing, plumbing and mixing concrete among other areas but Oliver usually lends me some work boots with steel toe-caps as they are what I am supposed to wear. The night before my first day of work experience I made my lunch, consisting of 4 sandwiches, 3 packets of crisps and 3 chocolate bars, and left it in the fridge. Then I made sure I had clean jeans, t-shirt and jumper for the next day. I got an early night that night as I had to be up at 6:30 to be at work at 7:00. Having woken up at 6:30 I left the house at 6:45 to walk to Heath End launderette where Oliver would pick me up and drive me to where we were working that day. He picked me up at the launderette because his dad, my boss, owns it and Oliver used to live above it. I found out I would be working with a Polish man named Tomak for the week. Which was fine by me but, unfortunately, Tomak didnt speak much English. It was a very cold morning so I put on two t-shirts and a jumper as well as my fleece. That day, we were working in Godalming felling some conifers. Olivers job was to cut them down bit by bit and Tomak and I had to put the branches and logs into the chipper. The chipper is a very powerful machine. You feed the branch into the hopper and once the first bit reaches the teeth it pulls the rest in and spits woodchip into the trailer we were filling. Then we had lunch which was about 45 minutes long as we were very tired and hungry. Fortunately, Oliver had brought a flask of hot tea for us all to enjoy. When we had finished cutting down the trees and chipping all of the branches, it was my job to take a pair of secateurs, which are like big scissors, and cut down all the little bits which were too small for Olivers powerful chainsaw. We finished clearing up at about 4:30 and then Oliver drove us back to the launderette and I walked home from there. I arrived home at about 5:15, very tired and dirty. The next day I woke at the same time to be at work at 7. It wasnt quite as cold as the previous day so I only wore one t-shirt and a jumper. That day Tomak and I had to clear logs which Oliver had cut down the previous week in a woodland. It was on the same site as the previous day but, as it is a very big site, was about 10 minutes walk from where we felled the conifers. As Tomak was a lot bigger and stronger than me, I lifted the smaller, dryer logs and Tomak carried the larger, wetter ones as they were heavier. He picked one up and, as he was walking along, suddenly threw the log about 4 feet away from him and fell to the floor. I dropped the log I was picking up at the time and ran to see what had happened. He had twisted his ankle and remained on the floor rubbing and stretching it for about 5 minutes then just got up and carried on working. Over the next three days we were at the same site in Godalming. Tomak and I had to stack hay bails on the Wednesday, split logs on Thursday and dig a trench to drain a field on Friday. Although on Friday we were assisted by Andy. Although I only worked with Tomak, Andy and Oliver I had a great time. I have always got on well with Andy and Oliver as I had worked with them before but Tomak and I got on surprisingly well despite his bad English. I had a bit of a sore neck by the end of the week though because Oliver is about 6 foot 4 inches and Andy is about 6 foot 6 and I had to keep looking up at them! My only low point was having to stack hay bails on Wednesday. I suffer from hayfever so I started sneezing and my eyes semi-closed plus it was really hot as well. Hay bails arent that light, theyre actually quite heavy so we got all hot and sweaty and I didnt know that if youre not used to hay then it can give you a rash. I only had shorts and a t-shirt and I got little itchy, white spots all over my arms and legs which was made worse by the sweat. Then we had a very long lunch break which meant I had to sit there itching for about an hour. The best part was on Friday. Oliver brought down his air rifle and we set up some targets on a nearby tree and we all had a go at shooting. As it turns out I have quite good aim and got more targets than everyone. Looking back it was a good experience and I think it showed me that, although I enjoyed the week, a career in tree surgery isnt for me. Im just not tall enough!

Effect of Globalization on Market Processes

Effect of Globalization on Market Processes This is the concept is well established in the current market process, Globalization is the international process and activities. Generally globalization means countries interrelated and integrated each and other. But academics and professionals provide different definition to globalization as follows, (Suny Levin institute) Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven byinternational tradeandinvestmentand aided byinformation technology. This process has effects on theenvironment, onculture, on political systems, oneconomic developmentand prosperity, and onhuman physical well-beingin societies around the world Ambassador Gà ©rard Stoudmann Globalization is a process that encompasses the causes, course, and consequences of transnational and Trans cultural integration of human and non-human activities.† Anthony McGrew’s Globalization [is] a process which generates flows and connections, not simply across nation-states and national territorial boundaries, but between global regions, continents and civilizations. This invites a definition of globalization as: ‘an historical process which engenders a significant shift in the spatial reach of networks and systems of social relations to transcontinental or interregional patterns of human organization, activity and the exercise of power. Sociologist Cesare Poppi â€Å"The literature stemming from the debate on globalization has grown in the last decade beyond any individual’s capability of extracting a workable definition of the concept. In a sense, the meaning of the concept is self-evident, in another, it is vague and obscure as its reaches are wide and constantly shifting. Perhaps, more than any other concept, globalization is the debate about it Generally, globalization has affected many nations in various ways; economically, politically, and socially. It is a term that refers to the fast integration and interdependence of various nations, which shapes the world affairs on a global level. Globalization has affected the products people consume, the environment, culture, security, and idea exchange between different countries. There are many factors that lead to the speedy globalization trends. Factors drive the globalization Globalization is the current strength of business and organization globalization is occurred for the following drivers otherwise globalization cannot achieve the better position in the market. Specially globalization emphasis drivers or factors illustrate under three category that are Market drivers Cost drivers Competition drivers Environmental drivers Market drivers Customer needs and wants is the main concern in the globalization, today market moves to updated service and process, but the organization consider the customer wants and need and they move to purchase the product and service from different area, then geographically every country they haven’t an entire resources, then the organization need a international support to achieve the market position. Global customers are other important factors who determine the international business and globalization, earlier the customers are requires the local product, and their requirement was limited to local but today international organization and multinational organization makes the customer limit into global, then the organization makes the international business and covers global customers as well International channeling and communication is another factor that drive the globalization today, telecommunication services are developed in many factors that makes the globalization into more effective and efficient, basically telecommunication development makes the globalization into effective and efficient. Technology There are many powerful factors of demand changes but the preference factor is technology. Today world is technology world. Technology affects and makes the changes in entire sectors. When the technology will change or update then the less period the organization can evaluate the sign of demand changes. Day to day technology development makes the organization survival into more difficult, but the organization also includes the innovation and create new concept into the business Strengths of market drivers Today a market driver makes the globalization into more effective and efficiency, there are many global areas, and business sector makes the process and business into standard. Specially banking industries, Soft drink industries, automobile industries, computer, aircraft industries are makes the market strength, and many industries uses the globalization to achieve the better position in the market as well. Traditionally and Separate different national markets are merging into one huge global marketplace where the preferences tastes and purchasing behavior of consumers in different nations are starting to converge to some global model. Cost drivers Second major important sector that determine the globalization is cost drivers, basically organization provide more importance for two activities, which are income level and cost, organization used the globalization to increase the income level and reduces the cost. Global scale economics, production different, changing technology, production development cost are the major factors that affect the globalization. Competitive advantages, absolute advantages are mostly consider under the cost drivers. Organization cost and scale of cost determines the globalization, firstly every organization consider the cost, and compare the cost, then the organization moves to less cost product and service, then the organization can increase the profit and income. Cost drivers are makes the activities and process into more better. Being lowers its overall costs by sourcing, manufacturing, and selling aircraft worldwide. Government and environmental factors Government and environmental factors that directly drive the globalization, trade policy is the main concern in the government sectors, every country that have a special government policies, and procedures, then the organization cannot freely provide the service to the market, then the organization must adopt to the government. government policies, and there economy policy decide the globalization activities as well. Government is another factors influence in the demand. Mostly government makes some changes and update in the country ongoing g process. Sometime country government directly influence in demand. Introduce new tariff, Tax holidays, newly product imports, increase or decrease Tax Government awareness programs, provide market ideas to citizen, political inflexible, Government budget deficit and etc. The above government intervention makes the changes in the demand and Government can make every changes so this is the more risky and powerful factors in demand changes Government system and procedures changes are another impact of the globalization. System and procedures changes inform that culture of the organization is different from the others. When government every small changes will makes the system also to be change. Simply government system and procedures are depending in country policy and economy scale., changes in government procedures, include new system, reporting power change, authority structure change, new people arrivals and economy interest rate, inflation rate are the major changes occurs after influence government drivers of globalization. Competitive drivers Every sector face the problem of competition, many academic people argued that the competition is the best sign for the healthy marketing. Today business is customer based business and the customers are king. Organization avoid the customer needs mean that is the major risk to the company. Globalization strategy is the better strategy to faced the competition challenges, Organization faced many problems in the internal and external factors, every organization provide the close competition to the product and service, then the organization need to up-date the product and service, makes the innovation services are more important to the organization, then the organization expand its service and range by day to day and that makes the globalization into more effective and essentials. Advantages and disadvantages of globalization Many years and decades that the above concept under the debates, because the organization and country were received the mixed results on globalization. Many development countries received the positive result from globalizations and developing countries failed to receive the positive result. There are many impacts that occurred from the globalization as follows, Globalization has positive side and negative side to both country and business as well. Specially economy that describes that income level increase, GDP and GNP level increase, market expansion, technology development, innovation and creativity activities, market trend increase, global standard products, quality of the product and service, and etc. But other side of the globalization that describes that country loss their own nature, and cultural impact, increase the poverty, market and resources are highly consumed, environmental impacts, social and individual attitude changes, and etc Advantages of globalization International Trade Today international trade and achieve the better market position are the main concern of international trade. International trade has become wider its possibility with the help of business process outsourcing, purchase and sale of product and service are not the only two transactions involved in international trade. International trade reduce the border of nation to nation and that makes the economy into more strength, specially international business process as well import and export are became huge growth, that impact to income per person and process. GDP and GNP increase is the another milestone advantage to the country and net profit increase, gross profit and profit margin increases are another favourable aspects in the globalization, when international market reduce the tariff, release the tax and other government intervention, then many investors interest to increase the investment in the market. Higher Sales Once product, service or company gets on the radar screen of scenario, it increases chances that consumers will make a purchase. As knowledge becomes a truth, it is also the point where new customers start to extend the word, telling friends and family about this remarkable new product they exposed. Sales will steadily increase as spreads. Without employing marketing strategies, these sales may not have ever happened Healthy Competition Marketing also foster an environment in the marketplace for strong completion. Marketing hard work get the word out on pricing of products and services, this not only reaches the future consumers, but also reaches other companies competing for the consumers’ business. As opposed to companies that have a control on products and services that can blame almost any price, marketing helps keep pricing competitive for a business to try to win over consumers before its competition does. Without competition, well known companies would continue to sell while lesser known companies or new companies would situate little possibility of ever becoming successful. Marketing facilitates the healthy competition that allows small businesses and new businesses to be successful enter and grow in the marketplace Innovation and Intellectual Property The strength of enterprise is able to be seen across the victory stories that characterize many of businesses. The will to be successful even with the chances is what drive to grow businesses from position up, globalization makes the business into more effective and makes the human resource into more effective, that makes the creativity thoughts and innovation. Other favourable advantages of globalization as follows, Channel Execution system and implementation of recognized social media channels (Face book, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Foursquare, YouTube, LinkedIn, Interest and more). Event Integration integrate social media into events, shows, and conference to increase alertness, word of mouth marketing and contribution Communication Communication and telecommunication development makes the organization process into effective. Today globalization makes the process and procedures into effective. Information technology has played a vital role in bringing the countries closer in terms of communication every single information is easily accessible from almost every corner of the world. The Internet has significantly affected the global economy, thereby providing direct access to information and products. Disadvantages of globalization Loss of Culture Every nation they have separate culture, and that recognize the country, After the globalization not impact on economy but also impact on culture, then that makes negative impact, and another economy cultures that directly influence on local country culture, and economy.. With large number of people migrate into and out of a country. They tend to follow the foreign culture more, forgetting their own roots. This can give rise to cultural conflicts. Monopoly Monopoly is a situation where in only one seller has a say in a particular product or products. It is possible that when a product is the leader in its field, the company may begin to exploit the consumers; the leader takes full advantage of the sale of its product, which may later lead to illegal and unethical practices being followed. Monopoly is disastrous as it widens the gap between the developed and developing countries. Environmental issues Every organization that entered to another economy and operate the business in different countries, then the globalization moves the capital into one place to another place then the organization starts the large investment, then the country or organization mislead the resources, that makes the process into defective. Monopoly Monopoly is a situation where in only one seller has a say in a particular product or products. It is possible that when a product is the leader in its field, the company may begin to exploit the consumers. As there exists no close competitors, the leader takes full advantage of the sale of its product, which may later lead to illegal and unethical practices being followed. Monopoly is disastrous as it widens the gap between the developed and developing countries. Developed countries can suppress development of undeveloped and under-developed countries, then the development countries uses the developing countries for only resource requirement, then the organization or developing countries are not interest in the globalization Economic depression in one country can trigger adverse reaction across the globe. Essay --

Under U.S. GAAP, entities can generally recognize revenue when it is realized or realizable and earned. 1. Revenue can be recognized when it is realized or realizable. For revenue to be realized, a company must receive cash or claims to cash in exchange of goods, services, or other assets. Similarly, for revenue to be realizable, the firm’s goods, services, or other assets must be exchanged for other assets that are â€Å"readily convertible to known amounts of cash or claims to cash† (605-10-25-1). This means that the entity’s assets were not exchanged for cash or claims to cash, but instead, for another company’s assets, such as short-term investments and government securities. 2. Revenue can be recognized when earned. Entities can earn revenue if the firm has â€Å"substantially accomplished what it must do to be entitled to the benefits represented by the revenues† (605-10-25-1). For example, when companies substantially completed (a) provision of professional services, (b) delivery or production of goods, or (c) other activities that constitute its ongoing major or central operations, revenues is earned. Issue 2 (â€Å"Bill and Hold†) Question: One of the issues faced by TerraSure relates to revenue recognition of finished goods that have not yet been delivered to customers due to inadequate storage space in customer’s warehouses. TerraSure has engaged in two different methods to deal with this situation. With the first method, TerraSure segregates the inventory within its own finished goods warehouse. In the second method, TerraSure ships customer’s inventory to a third party warehouse, where customers directly pick up their inventory. Background: Regarding â€Å"bill and hold† inventory, the SEC Staff Guidance states that these ... ...ordance with the terms of the arrangement, has been delivered or is available for immediate and unconditional delivery. 3. The license period of the arrangement has begun and the customer can begin its exploitation, exhibition, or sale. 4. The arrangement fee is fixed or determinable. 5. Collection of the arrangement fee is reasonably assured (926-602-25-1) Responses: Since TerraSure does not allow its customers to show the films until after its promotional activities begin, it cannot recognize revenue at the point of sale. To correctly recognize revenue for the film licensing contracts, customer must have all rights to exploit, exhibit, or sale (926-602-25-10). Even though the film is delivered to the customer, TerraSure must recognize revenue from licensing agreements not at the point of sale, but after the marketing department begin its promotional activities.

Politics in Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness :: Heart Darkness essays

Politics in Heart Of Darkness Anyone can read Heart Of Darkness and easily sense the attitude of Conrad toward English politics. Many times throughout Heart Of Darkness Conrad points out the pointlessness and savagery of English colonization. Conrad also comments a bit on society as a whole. With these two ideas added to the book, there is no wonder of why Heart of Darkness is such a touching novel. Through several examples, Conrad often shows the pointlessness and savagery of the English colonization in Africa. Probably the first instance of this is when Marlow comes up to the French-man who is "shelling the bush". In this scene, the French see something move and so they start shelling it for that reason. The shelling really does no good; if fact, it probably does not even kill what is out there. This represents what the English are doing in a way -- they are trying to conquer a land by shelling it to death and by trying to kill all the people who live there. The next example that Conrad gives is when he sees the black guard, who is leading the black slaves in a chain gang, straighten up when he sees a white man. What this shows is how everyone tries to look better than they are when they are in front of a supposed superior person. Also it shows that if a person can suck up enough -- and sometimes betray their own people -- they can move up in the world. Probably the biggest example of the pointless of colonization is when Marlow is walking around and he sees big holes just around, a train and tools rusting to pieces, and when he hears blasts that seem to do nothing. What this shows is that the English presence in Africa does no good but create a empty hole in it (the big hole), that the English are just was wasting their time and money on a needless project (the rusting objects), and that the English seem to do nothing in Africa (the pointless blasting). One the final examples that he gives is the manager. This manager is all dressed up in "proper" clothes, must have everything in a perfect order, and complains about the sick man in the corner of the room. This symbolizes how uncaring the English are in their pursuit for ivory.

They need to be the right person for the right role. A poor staff member can cost time and money and can in turn bring a lack of confidence in the Company by the authorities which use our services. IT is therefore imperative that the recruitment criteria to followed and adhered to. We have a recruitment and selection policy ( see evidence 1) We have to cover all aspects in the legislation needed for the health and social care industry. These include: Asylum and Immigration Act 1996. Data Protection Act 1998. Care Standards Act 2000. Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Safeguarding of Vulnerable Groups Act 2006. Health and Social Care Act 2008. Equality Act 2010. We also have to cover Regulations in Health and Social Care, these include: Health and Social Care Act 2008. Employment Equality Regulation (religion or belief and Sexual orientation) 2003. Employment Equality Regulation (age) 2006. Part time Workers Regulation 2000. There may be times when criminal convictions or cautions are disclosed on an application form or at interview stage. Some of these convictions or cautions may require us as a company to seek specialist help to discover the full story of the offence. The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 allows some convictions to be ignored after a certain rehabilitation period. The reasoning behind this is so that the person holding the conviction will not have a lifelong ‘scar’ on their record if it has been a minor offence in their past. Once the rehabilitation period is spent and no other convictions are made, in certain instances the person may not need to disclose the conviction, if for example applying for a job. In adults the normal  rehabilitation is 5 years for non- custodial sentences, 7 years for custodial sentences up to 6 months and 10 years for custodial sentences over 6 months and up to 2  ½ years Any custodial sentence over 2  ½ can never be spent.. The period for young offenders is normally half that of an adult. Jobs in the care sector are exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all applicants must under- go and pass an enhanced DBS (disclosure and barring service)previously known as CRB (criminal records bureau) Huntley and Carr, Soham murders 2002. Ian Hunley had slipped through the net on his CRB as police had entered his name incorrectly and the wrong date of birth. Even with many previous allegations against children, none had resulted in any conviction, but the school were aware of his past history but still employed him. Home Secretary David Blunkett stated he would start an investigation into the ‘vetting system’ In this case police have declared they should have checked identity input was correct and that all previous allegations which were held on file should have been further investigated. Serious case review of Carefirst 24 based in Surry. Domiciliary care company were employing illegal immigrants. Police and local council did emergency planning to remove clients from Carefirst 24 and place with other agencies. When Carefirst 24 offices were raided several self- funding clients were found, these too were placed with other agencies. Unfortunately Mrs Foster had been over looked and was left with no care for almost 9 days, her care package was 4 calls daily. When she was finally found by a district nurse and admitted to hospital she was in a very poor state of health. She consequently died. During the enquiry it was found that there had been no multi agency communication i.e. gps visiting but unable to gain access due to not knowing key safe number, then not following up the appointment. The recommendations in domiciliary based care are to: Involve service user in their care plan and assessment, this should be done with face to face contact. Legible, dated and signed attendance logs should be kept for each visit. Quality control procedures to be in place to detect any service deficiencies immediately. The manager, supervisors and care  staff should show a full commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all service users in their care at all times. No matter how large or small a company is, it is important to supply an up to date detailed job description to all employees, describing job requirements, reporting to higher post routine and expected performance standards. It is advisable to have two interviewers on the panel. A pre prepared list of questions should be asked to each interviewee and a scale of answers which should be given. I need to ask questions such as, Do you have any problems with giving personal care? Do you have access to a reliable car, due to accessing some service user’s homes? I also have to gain knowledge into their flexibility to working hours, their knowledge of both Welsh and English communication. I also wish to discover if the applicant has any previous experience or training qualifications. During interview I can also learn about their personality, team player abilities, emotional stability, confidence and their future goals. A lot can be learnt about the interviewees in their body language, are they confident/nervous relaxed/up tight, easy going/strict, good communicator or reluctant to engage in general conversation. Part of the interview includes double checking their application form with them, so that their answers are fully understood. This gives me the opportunity to make sure no needed information is missing, such as breaks in employment or residences. The latter will be needed for the DBS process. I also ask if they know of any reason why we should not be able to gain a reference from any of the 3 named referees given, (these referees have to be telephoned to confirm they are the person named and that they have completed the reference form themselves) I also give the interviewee another chance to declare anything which may show up on a DBS. If I feel an applicant is suitable for the role they have applied for, I post out an application successful letter. This states that the offer is made on the receipt of successful references and DBS check. The offer can be withdrawn if these are not clear. Our methods and criteria to recruit new staff are the same at all levels. When an application form is received, it is read by 2 senior members of staff and at this point it is decided if an interview is to be given. If a verbal offer of employment is given, it must also be followed up in writing. Health and Social care roles have a strict vetting system, which is normally safe and reliable. But as already pointed out with the Soham case things can go wrong. I promote honesty and openness at interviews as some convictions can be considered. If a person is recruited who is wrong for the organisation and role this can lead to quick staff turnover and increased costs for the organisation. It could also lower the morale of existing staff due to new employee not ‘fitting in’ with the team by not working well in their role. It is important that any new employee has flexibility and commitment but they also need to have the passion to listen and learn. In the domiciliary care organisations continuous recruitment is ongoing. This is due to continuing expansion and needing trained staff in place before new service users can be taken on. Whilst interviewing it is important for the interviewer to smile and encourage the interviewee to feel relaxed. If an interviewee appears nervous this is not a sign of them being unsuitable for the role. Some individuals generally find interviews a nerve wracking situation but they are relaxed in all other situations. One of the questions I ask is, ‘why have you applied to become a community care assistant with this company’. I find the answer to this question is invaluable. I can discover if the candidate is really interested in the role or that it ‘just a job or the DWP have made them apply for any job just to keep receiving their benefits.
